Abstract Nonlinearities in rotating systems have been seen to cause a wide variety of rich phenomena; however, the understanding these phenomena has limited because numerical approaches typically rely on “brute force” time simulation, which is slow due issues step size and settling time, cannot locate unstable solution families, may miss key responses if correct initial conditions are not used. This work uses continuation explore such more systematic way. A simple isotropic rotor system with smooth nonlinearity studied, frame used obtain periodic solutions. Asynchronous oscillating amplitude initiate at certain drive speeds internal resonance, manner similar that observed for nonsmooth rotor–stator contact previous literature. These isolated, sense they will only meet trivial synchronous limit zero damping out balance forcing. In addition increasing our systems, establishes potential as tool systematically nonlinear systems.
